Incredible food, rich history and plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors... Toronto holidays have got it all.

Whatever your interests, you can be sure of a good time in Toronto. Whether you're an art lover, a foodie or a history buff, there's plenty to keep your itinerary packed. The city's beautiful waterfront is a big draw, as is its plethora of green spaces and pleasant beaches. There's a great choice of shopping options too, and as a fantastically diverse city, you can also be sure of a great mix of cultures and a wide range of delicious cuisines. Following strong development over the last few decades, Toronto has become a truly cosmopolitan city, complete with dazzling modern architecture, a delightful waterfront area and great public transport. Often hailed as one of the best places to live in North America, it's an easy city to fall head over heels in love with.

As Canada's largest city, and an important cultural hub, Toronto offers plenty in the way of things to do and see. There's an extremely vibrant arts scene here, be it in the superb galleries or on the city's streets. History buffs are also well catered for, with a number of excellent museums to satisfy your curiosity. If you're keen to catch a performance, you'll have no trouble even on short Toronto trips. With a constant stream of live music, stand-up comedy, opera and poetry, you're sure to find something to watch on any night of the week. The theatre scene is also superb, with everything from quirky offbeat shows to broadway musicals. The theatres themselves are also a sight to behold, with the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre, built in 1913, being especially beautiful.

As a relatively compact city, Toronto is easy to navigate and explore. There are several different neighbourhoods to visit, each with their own charm and attractions. One of the most popular destinations on many Toronto tours is the waterfront, home to a range of al fresco eateries, artificial beaches and a laid back atmosphere. The trendy Distillery District, meanwhile, offers quirky restaurants converted from industrial buildings along with plenty of chic boutiques. For a real contrast, a visit to bohemian Dundas West, with its laid-back cafes and bars, followed by a wander through the plush buildings of the Financial District can't be beaten.

THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO

When it comes to sights and attractions, there's plenty on offer for Toronto holidays at any time of the year. The CN Tower is a great first stop. Taking the glass-bottomed lift to the 350-metre high viewing platform at this iconic radio tower provides incredible views over the city, as well as planes taking off and landing at the city's airport. Elsewhere, St James Cathedral is worthy of a visit, with its stunning Gothic architecture and the tallest steeple in the country, as is the extraordinary BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. This spectacular Hindu temple was made using marble and limestone hand-carved in India, and is a breathtaking sight. For those with horticultural interests, the Allan Gardens Conservatory is a joy. Featuring six greenhouses that pay host to a fantastic variety of plants, trees and flowers, it may provide some inspiration to take back home.

As you'd expect from any world-class cosmopolitan city, Toronto has a fantastic array of museums and galleries to explore. The  Royal Ontario Museum is one of the largest museums in North America, and is home to a fantastic mix of art and natural history. The Gardiner Museum houses a beautiful assortment of ceramics, and the Bata Shoe Museum is a surprisingly popular stop on many Toronto tours. The city also has a variety of period homes to discover, including Casa Loma. Completed in 1914, this Gothic-revival style castle is full of enchanting decor, as well as tunnels and secret passages. To delve into the city's art scene, the Art Gallery of Ontario is a great place to start. With over 90,000 pieces to see, it's one of the leading art museums on the continent. Elsewhere, the small but charming Toronto Dominion Gallery of Inuit Art is also worth a look. If you're keen to do a bit of shopping following an afternoon of culture, you'll be spoilt for choice. Along with quirky independent shops the city is home to PATH, the world's largest underground shopping mall, spanning 30 kilometres in total.

If you're craving some time amidst the great outdoors, Toronto trips have plenty of options. The waterfront is home to several walking and cycling routes, and pleasant green spaces such as Kew Gardens and High Park make the perfect setting for an afternoon stroll. Sugar Beach, complete with deck chairs and sand, is a wonderful urban park to relax in, while a wander around the Toronto Zoo is always a hit. A little further afield are the Toronto Islands. These lush green islands can be reached via a 15-minute boat ride from the city, and being almost completely vehicle-free, are the ideal spot for a more serene day.

FOOD AND DRINK IN TORONTO

Toronto holidays provide the chance to sample the city's exceptional culinary scene. From fine dining to laid back family-run restaurants, there's a superb mix of venues, and with fantastic local produce, fish, and wild game, you won't have to search too hard to find mouthwatering dishes. The city is truly international, and this diversity is reflected in its food scene. Whatever cuisine you're craving, you're sure to find at least one restaurant or cafe to satisfy your taste buds. There are whole neighbourhoods dedicated to the city's international residents, including Chinatown, Little Italy, and Greektown. Whether you opt for dim sum or pasta, you can enjoy tantalising, authentic dishes across the city.

While there's no specific local cuisine, there are several very popular dishes. Few Toronto trips would be complete without trying poutine. This delicious combination of cheese curds and gravy layered on chips can be found throughout the city; even many of the upscale restaurants have their own, more sophisticated, take on the dish. Another local speciality is the peameal-bacon sandwich. It may just be bacon in a bun, but this simple delicacy is so beloved by locals that you'll often see long queues of hungry customers waiting at food trucks come lunch time.
